President Barack Obama sat down with leaders of Congress at a crucial deficit- reduction negotiating session Thursday as the White House signaled a willingness to reduce costs for major benefit programs like Social Security and Medicare while Republicans indicated they might consider new steps to raise revenue.

Obama met with the leaders of both parties around a table in the Cabinet Room as they struggled to reach a deal on raising the government' s debt limit with less than four weeks remaining before the government faces the prospect of a first- ever default on U. S. financial obligations. " I think there will be a spirit of trying to get results here, " House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R- Va. , said early Thursday. While discussions on trimming the costs of entitlement programs had centered on Medicare, the health care program for older Americans, the White House is revisiting a proposal raised earlier in the negotiations to change the inflation measurement used to calculate Social Security cost- of- living adjustments, thus reducing annual increases. House Speaker John Boehner told reporters before leaving for the White House that proposals to reform the tax code are " under discussion" as part of budget talks with Obama, but the Ohio Republican promised that any such plans won' t " raise taxes on the American people. " " We believe that comprehensive tax reform, both on the corporate side and the personal side, will make America more competitive, help create jobs in our country, and is something that is under discussion, " Boehner said. The White House signaled Wednesday that the president is aiming for deficit reduction closer to $ 4 trillion over 10 years & mdash; an ambitious number that would nearly double the roughly $ 2 trillion that had been at the center of negotiations.

Negotiations are gaining urgency by the day, because Republicans are insisting on major cuts to the deficit as the price for approving legislation to maintain the government' s ability to borrow money and stave off a market- rattling default. Democratic and Republican officials familiar with the discussions said Thursday that Social Security was in the mix for potential cost savings.

Reintroducing the retirement program to the talks is likely to cause anxiety among congressional Democrats who have insisted that Social Security does not contribute to the nation' s deficit problems. The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks. They stressed that no aspect of the deal had been accepted by either side. Obama ignored a question about Social Security during a photo session at the beginning of the meeting. One official said that an option under discussion would allow Republicans to make a commitment to overhaul and simplify the tax system that would lower individual and corporate tax rates while closing loopholes, ending some deductions and limiting other tax subsidies.

Those changes could generate tax revenue and was central element of a deficit reduction plan proposed by a bipartisan commission early this year.

That discussion also included lowering the costs of Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. Amid media reports Thursday of Social Security' s inclusion in the debt- cutting talks, Obama' s chief spokesman, Jay Carney, pushed back. " There is no news here - the president has always said that while Social Security is not a major driver of the deficit, we do need to strengthen the program, " Carney said, providing that any such effort " doesn' t slash benefits. " His statement did not directly address the possibility of reducing annual Social Security increases by changing the inflation adjustments. Two Democratic officials allied with Obama said the president believes it would be easier to win bipartisan support in the House and Senate for a deal that embraces larger deficit cuts closer to the $ 4 trillion over 12 years that Obama proposed in April. The officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity to discuss the secret negotiations more freely, said the precise number was still in flux, but they said Obama would be making the case for more rather than less deficit reduction in his discussions with congressional leaders Thursday.

However, any larger figure would depend on agreement on a long- term deficit or spending cap, enforced by automatic spending cuts and, under Obama' s proposals, a tax- increase " trigger" that would be tripped if targets were not met. Negotiations within the Biden- led group on the idea of spending caps and tax triggers had reached an impasse, however, a GOP aide familiar with the talks said.

The negotiations are the first official sit- down since last month, when House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R- Va. , left talks that had been led by Vice President Joe Biden, citing an insistence by Democrats on raising taxes. But Cantor went out of his way Wednesday to make clear that he bolted the Biden group over an administration proposal to limit the ability of upper- bracket taxpayers and small businesses to claim deductions & mdash; and he signaled a willingness to consider closing some tax loopholes for businesses as part of a broader budget pact. " If the president wants to talk loopholes, we' ll be glad to talk loopholes, " said Cantor, adding that any revenues raised from closing loopholes " should be coupled with offsetting tax cuts somewhere else. " On Thursday, Cantor said that any deal to avert a government default must include " reforms to the system" to show that Washington can manage the country' s finances. The Virginia Republican conceded in an interview that special interest loopholes in the tax code must be addressed.

But he also said Republicans are being falsely accused of blocking agreement on a package of spending cuts necessary to produce enough votes to renew the Treasury' s borrowing authority, which expires Aug. Cantor said differences between Democrats and Republicans over such issues as tax breaks for owners of corporate jets were not the factors behind his decision last week to walk out of deficit- reduction talks led by Vice President Joe Biden. " There was a fundamental disagreement over whether we should raise taxes right now, " he said. His comments reflected important, if nuanced, flexibility by Republicans. His earlier position was that closing loopholes should wait for a comprehensive overhaul of the tax code. And he didn' t rule out using loophole revenues to extend existing tax cuts instead of paying for new ones.

In the Senate, however, GOP leader Mitch Mc. Connell was against the idea. " To sort of cherry- pick items in the context of this current negotiation at the White House strikes me as pretty challenging, " he said. After a pugnacious news conference last week, Obama struck a far softer tone Tuesday in inviting lawmakers to the White House. But on Wednesday, Obama attacked Republicans as defenders of wasteful and unfair loopholes, such as subsidies for highly profitable oil companies or a break given to companies that purchase private jets. " The debt ceiling should not be something that is used as a gun against the heads of the American people to extract tax breaks for corporate jet owners or oil and gas companies that are making billions of dollars, " Obama said during a town hall that featured questions posed through the online social network Twitter. Thursday' s session comes several days after Obama and House Speaker John Boehner, R- Ohio, met secretly at the White House to try to end political posturing and get negotiations back on track.

Cantor was interviewed on CBS' s " The Early Show" and NBC' s " Today" show.

CHESTER, Pa. & # 8211; & nbsp; Eric Lichaj and Brek Shea made their U. S. national team debuts. Coach Bob Bradley experimented with another new formation. The post- World Cup Americans are a work in progress, finishing the home portion of their 2010 schedule with a dull 0- 0 draw against Colombia on Tuesday night that extended their three- year winless streak against South American opponents to nine matches. " It' s a game that in the first half, we didn' t find a good rhythm, " said Bradley, who changed five starters from Saturday' s 2- 2 tie against Poland in Chicago. " We' re not playing forward fast enough, so we couldn' t put passes together that took us somewhere. As we go forward, as we work on playing some different ways, we have to work on our movement.

As a result, even when we put passes together, we didn' t get anywhere. " The U. S. is 4- 5- 4 this year, in danger of its first losing record in a year since going 5- 6- 7 in 1997. The Americans complete 2010 play on Nov. 17, when they return to South Africa for an exhibition against Bafana Bafana in Cape Town.

Since a 3- 1 exhibition win over Ecuador in March 2007, the Americans are 0- 7- 2 against South American nations. After trying out a 4- 2- 3- 1 formation Saturday, Bradley experimented with a 4- 3- 3 in the first half that turned into more of a 4- 5- 1, with son Michael Bradley, Maurice Edu and Jermaine Jones all in defensive midfield roles.

The Americans wound up playing deep and narrow, with Shea failing to get forward in a pairing with Stuart Holden on the outside. " It' s a new system for us, so we' re going to have some communication problems that we need to work on, " said Edu, who had been shifted to central defender against the Poles. " I think over time, if we work on this system, we can do well with it. Today wasn' t our best game but we can take the positive from it and move on. " Jones and the 21- year- old Lichaj, who entered at right back for Jonathan Spector at the start of the second half, had strong performances. Lichaj' s 86th- minute cross set up Jozy Altidore, whose header was saved by 39- year- old goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon. " It' s just about bringing some energy, " said Lichaj, who made his Aston Villa debut in August. " I' m just trying to do my part. " Shea, a 20- year- old with FC Dallas, started and was replaced by Clint Dempsey at the start of the second half. " I was excited more than anything, " Shea said. " We struggled a bit tonight. I was a bit nervous understandably.

I feel the next time I get to play in a match, I think I definitely will be more comfortable. I think I' ll do a lot better and hopefully the team will get a win. " Jones, a Schalke regular, played three exhibition games for Germany before switching nationalities and making his U. S. debut Saturday. He missed all of last season with a shin injury.

In three games since the World Cup, Bradley gave four players debuts.

Los Angeles Galaxy defender Omar Gonzalez started in the August 2- 0 loss to Brazil. " It was an interesting game for us, " Bradley said. " We got an opportunity to get Brek Shea and Eric Lichaj some national attention. That' s an important step for both of them. " Without Landon Donovan, who stayed with the Los Angeles Galaxy this week, and Dempsey, who began the night on the bench, the U. S. had no attack in the first half. Both sides showed more life in the second half, as the U. S. switched to its regular 4- 4- 2 formation.

Michael Bradley put the ball in the net in the 73rd minute after Benny Feilhaber, who entered in the 59th, passed to Altidore on a free kick. The goal was disallowed because Bradley and Altidore both were offside. Oguchi Onyewu was the U. S. captain for the first time until halftime, when he was replaced by Nordsjaelland defender Michael Parkhurst and Dempsey took over the arm band. Still recovering from knee surgery last October, Onyewu went 90 minutes Saturday in his first game action since being benched after the first- round match against Slovenia at the World Cup.

Onyewu hasn' t even dressed for AC Milan this season and refused to talk with reporters after the game. Another little- used Rossoneri defender, 34- year- old Mario Yepes, was Colombia' s captain. Aston Villa' s Brad Guzan started in goal, while Everton' s Tim Howard, the regular No.

1, was on the bench. Colombia coach Hernan Dario Gomez gave Mondragon his first appearance for the national team since the 2005 CONCACAF Gold Cup against Panama. NOTES: Parkhurst' s appearance was his first since July 2009 against Haiti in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. . . . The U. S. was without regular captain Carlos Bocanegra and right back Steve Cherundolo.

Both returned to Europe after the Poland match. . . . It was the first 0- 0 tie for the U. S. since an exhibition against Argentina in June 2008.

This is a rush transcript from " Journal Editorial Report, " June 18, 2011.

This copy may not be in its final form and may be updated. PAUL GIGOT, HOST: & nbsp; This week on the " Journal Editorial Report, " Michele Bachmann jumps into the presidential race, upending the Republican top tier. Can she or someone else knock Mitt Romney from his frontrunner pedestal?

Plus, the Lone Star State soars as others struggle, creating hundreds of thousands of new jobs.

What has Texas done right? And could Governor Rick Perry ride the surge all the way to the White House?

As more colleges embrace co- ed or gender- neutral student housing, one university is bucking the trend and returning to the single- sex dorm. We' ll tell you why. Welcome to the " Journal Editorial Report, " I' m Paul Gigot. Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann threw her hat into the 2012 presidential ring this week, upending the GOP field' s top tier. Coming off a strong debate performance, former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney appears to have solidified his frontrunner status, with 30 percent of likely Republican primary voters in the latest Wall Street Journal/ NBC poll saying they' d vote for him.

Will Bachmann' s announcement or others to come threaten that lead?

Joining the panel this week, Wall Street Journal columnist and deputy editor, Dan Henninger; editorial board member, Dorothy Rabinowitz; and senior economics writer, Steve Moore. Dan, let' s talk about Michele Bachmann first. What are the sources - - she' s risen on the polls from her debate performance and announcement. What are the sources of her support?

DAN HENNINGER, COLUMNIST & amp; DEPUTY EDITOR: One source is that people know her.

She' s been on television a lot the last few years. But I think there' s something more specific, Paul. I would say her support does lie with the Tea Party.

Understand, I' ve always thought the Tea Party was more a metaphor than an actual organization. There are people - - HENNINGER: & nbsp; There are people beyond the Tea Party who are very upset, very angry and ready to be activists. And I think Michele Bachmann is going to literally attempt to corral these people and bring them into her organization. She' s at a fundraising disadvantage right now and she' s at an organizational disadvantage. And I would say she' s in some ways, analogous, believe it or not, to Barack Obama in 2008, had this youth corps, the Internet- based things.

And if she can get people to start to go to Iowa and New Hampshire and working on her behave, sending her small donations, I think she can reach critical mass and challenge these other more well- organized people. GIGOT: & nbsp; So, Dorothy, the point Dan makes is that she' s a new face and that she' s an outsider, not part of the establishment. That' s the source of her - - DOROTHY RABINOWITZ, EDITORIAL BOARD MEMBER: & nbsp; Oh, yes, she' s really quite charming in an effective way. She' s knowledgeable and it shows on camera. All of that plays very well.

But lurking underneath it all, there' s an understanding among people, who know elections, that she could threaten the rest of the nomination. But if she wins, there' s a huge electability doubt. She has toxic statements in the past, which will immediately rise. GIGOT: & nbsp; Because of their partisan nature and attacks? What do you mean toxic statements?

RABINOWITZ: & nbsp; No, no, it' s simply positions.

For example, her belief that we really would like to phase out Medicare and we' d like to phase out Social Security. Now, if you said, even if you stipulated we would do this in the year 4012, two centuries from now - - - - it' s not going to be OK. GIGOT: & nbsp; All right. Steve, the - - what about the experience issue?

She hasn' t been in Congress that long and the question would be, does she - - if she could get the nomination, will she seem to be somebody who can go toe to toe with Barack Obama and looks like somebody the American people could put in the Oval Office? STEVE MOORE, SENIOR ECONOMICS WRITER: & nbsp; Well, you know, I was very impressed with Michele Bachmann when I interviewed her last week for the paper, Paul.

She' s lightning in bottle, as we described her in our news story. She is someone who is incredibly dynamic. I was impressed with how knowledgeable she was in economic issues. What people paid attention to in our story was when we said she reads Ludwig van Mises on the beach.

GIGOT: & nbsp; Hold it.

Holt it, Steve. I want to ask you that.

The Austrian economist? Did you believe here when she said that? MOORE: & nbsp; Yes. You know what? I do believe her.

She knew about his writings and she said, I really - - I love the stuff he writes about consumer sovereignty and so on. So she' s knowledgeable about economics. I' ll say this, also. I really believe, Paul, if she wins Iowa, which I believe she can do - - you know, she' s from that area of the country - - it just puts total chaos on the whole race. So I think she' s going to be a potential frontrunner, that is to say, top- tier candidate in the next few weeks.

GIGOT: & nbsp; Let' s talk about Mitt Romney, Dan. He' s the frontrunner. Looks like the other candidates are competing to be the not Romney, the alternative to Mitt Romney and that' s benefiting him because the rest of the field is so fractured.

HENNINGER: & nbsp; Well, that' s right.

There is a phenomenon we' re all familiar with it, that the most well- known candidate tends to do well in these early polls. It' s basically name recognition.

Admittedly, he held his own in that debate. But Michele Bachmann did very well, too.

And it occurred to me that - - we are calling it the Twitter debate, this ridiculous CNN format, 30 seconds. I look back at it, she did pretty well inside that 30- second format on the debt ceiling and gay marriage and the states and EPA.

It' s a little surprising. The others not so well, she did very well. But I think it does - - Romney' s problem is that you sense a real desire for fresh faces and that' s why Bachmann - - that' s why you even hear people ask about Jon Huntsman, who hasn' t even shown up yet.

The people who have been around for a while, like Romney, I think could drop quickly if the others come on strong. GIGOT: & nbsp; Who do you think has the best chance, Dorothy, of emerging as the challenger to Romney? RABINOWITZ: & nbsp; In the current debate - - in the current one?

GIGOT: & nbsp; In the current field? RABINOWITZ: & nbsp; In the current one? I actually think that Michele Bachmann does.

GIGOT: & nbsp; Really?

RABINOWITZ: & nbsp; Yes, I think she does. It will be, from the point of view from the Republican Party, an immense fatal blow. And I don' t think it' s going to happen.

The NFL commissioner and the boss of the league' s locked- out players stood together this week and addressed the league' s rookies, a picture of cooperation that raised hopes pro football would soon be back in business. This, however, is the reality: The league' s longest work stoppage has now stretched into July, with gaps that still must be bridged before teams can be assembled and training camps can begin. The next bargaining session has been scheduled for after the holiday weekend, putting the end point of this labor dispute & mdash; now well past the 100- day mark & mdash; ever closer to the preseason. The negotiating teams led by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and NFL Players Association Executive Director De.

Maurice Smith met for a couple of hours Friday morning at a Minneapolis law firm with U.

Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan, following a 15- hour Thursday session that stretched past midnight and gave the negotiators a short night' s sleep.

Several people familiar with the situation said the talks would resume Tuesday in New York City. The people all spoke on condition of anonymity to The Associated Press because Boylan has ordered the details of the talks to be kept confidential.

Goodell, Smith, their colleagues and constituents all appeared in good spirits as they left the office building where they met and either walked away or climbed into black cars waiting by the doors. But they had little to offer for an update. " We' ll continue to meet next week, and the goal is to get a deal done, " Smith said on his way out.

Said NFL lead negotiator Jeff Pash: " We' ll be back at it again next week. " Friday marked the fourth straight day of discussions, with a handful of owners and players joining their lawyers and leaders for the last two days.

The two sides have been trying to figure out how to agree on the division of revenues for this $ 9 billion business that has steadily grown in popularity, power and wealth over the last couple of decades as the NFL has become the nation' s dominant pro sports league. The revenue split, a major sticking point all along and particularly over the last couple of weeks, is considered a domino that must fall for a deal to get done. There are several other issues to iron out as well, since the two sides are essentially creating a new collective bargaining agreement from scratch. The old one expired March 11, and the lockout began the next day. That' s also when the NFLPA declared an end to its union status, a move the owners have protested as strategically convenient and have contested in court.

Among the players in Minneapolis this week were Jeff Saturday of the Indianapolis Colts and Brian Waters of the Kansas City Chiefs, with Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and John Mara of the New York Giants part of the group of owners. For weeks, owners, players and their representatives have been crisscrossing the country, holding unannounced meetings in spots ranging from a Chicago suburb to the Maryland shore. This week began with optimism stemming from the joint trip Smith and Goodell took to Sarasota, Fla. , to address incoming rookies at an orientation symposium Wednesday morning. But they still left Minneapolis without a deal, and time has become more of a factor in this process.

Training camps start in about three weeks, with the preseason- opening Hall of Fame game scheduled Aug. 7 between the Chicago Bears and Arizona Cardinals.

Even missing an exhibition game or two would begin to really cost the league money, not to mention testing the faith of the fans that have made this sport so big. There also is the wild card of a pending ruling by the 8th U. Circuit Court of Appeals in the players' antitrust lawsuit against the league, which was filed in Minneapolis and prompted Boylan' s involvement as a mediator. The appellate judges won' t wait forever, and one of them warned earlier that neither side will like their decision on the legality of the lockout. But a faction on the players' side believes it' s worth waiting on the court' s ruling, and the owners have had plans in place for years to endure an extended work stoppage.

Corey Maggette has played 12 seasons in the NBA and been to the playoffs only once.

Now he' s about to join a team that' s never won a postseason game and has spent the past year getting rid of most of its veterans and scorers in a rebuilding movement. But Maggette insists he was thrilled to be traded to Charlotte for three reasons: He' s about to start again, play his natural position and, most importantly, suit up for Bobcats owner Michael Jordan . " If you understand Michael Jordan' s game & mdash; and I' m from Chicago & mdash; you know that he' s a winner, " Maggette said Wednesday in a conference call with reporters. " And eventually he' s going to get to that point where he' s winning. " As Jordan prepares for his sixth season in charge of the basketball operations in Charlotte and his second full year as majority owner, he' ll lean on Maggette to provide immediate scoring and a much- needed veteran presence on what is now one of the NBA' s most inexperienced teams. The conviction of Muzzammil “ Mo” Hassan yesterday, a Buffalo TV executive who beheaded his wife, Aasiya Zubair, brings some measure of closure to a horrible story which continues to haunt me. & # 160; For several years, we worked together on a show which I created and hosted at Bridges TV, a cable station the couple built to “ bridge the gap between Islam and the West. ” Having started out to accomplish that important goal, and in light of the friendship I had with Aasiya in particular, the events in Buffalo have been especially painful. The importance of this case however, is not a function of personal relationship; it lies in the necessity to address a real and growing problem. Tragically, this is not the only such trial going in the U.

In addition to the Erie County, N.

Y. case, there is also the trial of Faleh Hassan Almaleki, accused of murdering his daughter for becoming what he described as “ too westernized” begins on Monday in Maricopa County, Arizona. Honor killing is a real and horrendous reality. According to United Nations studies, 5, 000 women are murdered each year in the name of protecting the honor of their family and their faith. & # 160; While honor killing is usually linked to the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia, it is very much an issue here in the United States. Sadly, and often dangerously, those who claim to address this problem often get it so very wrong. In the Almaleki case, the defendant admits the religious- cultural justification for his alleged crimes.

In the Hassan case, the defendant made no such admission. But the fact that the killing included a decapitation certainly suggests roots, if not rationale, in the same religious- cultural context. And that is where this whole thing gets complicated. Tragedies of this kind demand both courage and understanding – the courage to engage in genuine critique of our own communities, and the willingness to extend genuine understanding to the communities of which we are not a part. & # 160; Those who are animated by hostility to Islam will find in these cases further justification for their hatred, and the overwhelming majority of those who view the tradition favorably will rush to distinguish between what the faith “ really teaches” and what is “ just cultural, ” as if that fine distinction will keep more women from being murdered.

The Muslim community needs to find the courage to seriously address the inevitable questions about the role of religion in these crimes, the extent to which Islam was a factor, the connection between domestic violence and traditional religious cultures, etc.

Without raising such questions, more women, some of whose deaths could be prevented, are sure to die.

And even if some of the people who really do raise these kinds of questions do not come from a place of earnest commitment to human rights and justice, it is not enough to cry “ Islamaphobe” when such questions are raised. Simply saying this has nothing to do with Islam and/ or religion, as too many religious leaders have done, is not acceptable. In fact, such an approach creates the very space utilized by those who use their religion in despicable ways. Defining a problem out of existence does not make it go away. It is only when practitioners take responsibility for the religious elements or underpinnings of those actions they abhor that they can help keep such abuses from happening.

By the same token, it is neither accurate nor appropriate when those who harbor malice against, or fear of, a particular community or religion circle around stories such as the murders in Arizona and Upstate New York like sharks around an injured swimmer. Instead of working the story for the angle that “ proves” what they already believe, they need to hold back and resist making rhetorical use out of other people’ s tragedies. If people on both sides of this issue really cared more about preventing more deaths than about defending ideological positions which they already hold, we would see two things.

First, we would see more Muslim religious and community leaders who did more than explain away the connections between faith and fighting, in the home or in the world. But that kind of courageous leadership demands a context in which it is reasonably safe for leaders to be that honest. Appreciating the importance of creating that context will give rise to the second thing we need to see now - - a kind of internal discipline by critics of Islam and by hard secularists, all of whom use tragedies like these murders to “ prove” the “ inherent deadliness of either religion in general or Islam in particular. The only thing that really counts here, beyond bringing the guilty parties to justice, is preventing further deaths.

That is something to which we will all can contribute as soon as we decide that it’ s more important to save lives than affirm beliefs or confirm previously held assumptions. Brad Hirschfield is the author of " You Don’ t Have to Be Wrong for Me to Be Right: Finding Faith Without Fanaticism, " and the President of Clal- The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership.

Police announced Tuesday night they arrested a second man in connection with a weekend home invasion at the southern Iowa farmhouse of U. Rep.

Leonard Boswell. Police announced Tuesday night they arrested a second man in connection with a weekend home invasion at the southern Iowa farmhouse of U.

Rep. Leonard Boswell. The Iowa Department of Public Safety said police arrested David Palmer Dewberry, 20, in Independence, Mo.

Dewberry, who is from Fremont, Neb. , is being held in Missouri on a federal warrant. Earlier Tuesday, authorities arrested Cody John Rollins, 19, of Lamoni, Iowa. Both men face charges related to a Saturday night invasion at Boswell' s rural home near Lamoni.

Authorities said a man with a BB gun that looked like a firearm entered the congressman' s house and attacked his daughter. Boswell fought with the man, and as they scuffled, his 22- year- old grandson got a shotgun. When Boswell' s grandson pointed the gun at the intruder, he ran off. Boswell, a 77- year- old Democrat, suffered minor injuries, but no one was seriously hurt. Authorities said that when Dewberry is returned to Iowa, he would be charged with first degree burglary, as. . .

It' s time to start dissecting. It' s time to start dissecting. With the Stanley Cup awarded, the Entry Draft completed, Free Agent Friday and the birthday celebrations of both Canada and the United States all behind us, enough has happened to form an early opinion on which NHL teams have set themselves up for success in 2011- 12 and which teams still have some work to do. Here are five teams that appear to be improved - - all pending results next winter and spring, of course - - and five others that are looking at unfinished business.

For most of us, a big holiday dinner or a night out on the town with friends sounds like a great idea. But for the millions of Americans living with gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD, it sounds more like a recipe for disaster. Characterized by symptoms of heartburn and regurgitation, GERD is a chronic condition where the acidic contents of the stomach flow back up into the esophagus. This constant backwash of stomach acid irritates the lining of the esophagus, and sufferers are left " feeling the burn. " There are simple changes that patients can make to their diet and lifestyle to help them manage the discomfort of their acid , according to Dr.

Anish Sheth, a gastroenterologist and assistant professor of medicine at Yale University. " It basically comes down to how frequently they' re having symptoms and how much the symptoms are affecting their life, " Sheth told Fox. News. com. " Avoiding caffeine, eliminating fatty or acidic foods, losing excess weight and quitting smoking are all things patients can do to control their acid reflux. " But while avoiding certain foods and changing habits may help people who deal with an occasional case of heartburn, these lifestyle modifications offer only temporary relief for patients suffering from more severe symptoms associated with GERD. " If people are having symptoms on a daily basis or more than three times a week, we usually recommend they start medication, " said Sheth. But with so many medications available, how do you know which one is right for you? Antacids.

Popular over- the- counter medications like Tums, Maalox, Rolaids and Mylanta neutralize stomach acid and provide fast- acting relief in mild or isolated cases of acid reflux. Some antacids come in liquid form to coat the lining of the esophagus and help reduce the amount of acid in the stomach. But they won' t aid in reducing inflammation of the esophagus associated with GERD. " Most patients suffering from mild acid reflux will treat themselves with over- the- counter medications, " Sheth said. " Antacids are better for immediate relief - - like after a big meal - - because their effectiveness is short- lived in nature and only lasts for as long as it' s in the system. " & # 160; Patients need to be conscious of the amount of antacids they are taking, because overuse can cause , constipation and, in rare cases, an imbalance in electrolytes if the antacid contains calcium. " You should see a doctor if your symptoms are not controlled by over- the- counter medicines because it could be a sign of a more serious condition, " Sheth said. Oral suspension medicines. These medications, like Pepto Bismol and Carafate, are sometimes used to treat heartburn and as well as nausea, and ulcers in the throat, stomach and intestines. " Carafate is a liquid suspension that essentially coats the inside of the esophagus.

It' s short- lived in its effectiveness because once the coating wears off it' s not going to do much, " Sheth said. " We really only prescribe it for people who have symptoms less than a couple times a week or month. " Anti- gas, anti- flatulence. Some patients experience pressure and bloating when they get heartburn. For these symptoms, over- the- counter products like Phazyme, Gas- X and Beano can aid in relieving pressure, bloating, and gas in the digestive tract.

These medications usually come in tablet form and work by breaking up gas bubbles, making it easier to eliminate. H- 2- receptor blockers.

Previously available only with a prescription, H- 2- receptor blockers such as Pepcid AC and Zantac are now sold over- the- counter. " H- 2- receptor blockers work by shutting off the production of acid in the stomach, " Sheth said. " They are effective for mild reflux, they' re relatively inexpensive and can be used casually by people who only have symptoms a couple times a month. " H- 2- receptor blockers provide longer- lasting relief than antacids, but they do not take effect as quickly, so it is suggested that people take them 30 minutes before meals or before bed.

Proton Pump Inhibitors ( PPIs) .

These medications, which include Prilosec, Prevacid and Nexium, block acid production and aid in healing damaged esophageal tissue, so they should be taken by people who are having more frequent, severe symptoms. PPIs are usually taken under the care of a doctor to prevent acid reflux from recurring, but certain ones, like Prilosec, are now available over- the- counter. " The standard of care for treating GERD and related digestive diseases has become proton pump inhibitors. And because they are so safe, these are the most common medicines, " Sheth said. The majority of people who go on a PPI will get better, Sheth said.

But there are other medications that can be prescribed by a doctor in the event that they don' t. It' s important for patients to pay attention to the frequency and severity of their symptoms, and to see a doctor if they suspect they may have GERD, because GERD can cause severe complications if left untreated. Sheth said there are a number of red flags that may indicate complications, including trouble swallowing, unexplained weight loss, , and drastic changes in symptoms. " GERD can cause a narrowing of the esophagus that leads to trouble swallowing, " Sheth said. " And in some patients, it causes a change in the lining of the esophagus called Barrett' s esophagus - - a condition that can lead to . "

WASHINGTON & mdash; Defense Secretary Robert Gates will retire from his post as the military& rsquo; s civilian boss sometime in 2011, he told Foreign Policy Magazine in an interview published Monday.

His press secretary, Geoff Morrell, acknowledged to Fox News that Gates has been & ldquo; trying in vain to find the appropriate time to retire& hellip; and that it makes sense to bow out in 2011. & rdquo; Gates said that he feels it& rsquo; s best to leave after the Afghanistan surge is complete and after the administration has had the chance to review its effect. & ldquo; I think that by next year I& rsquo; ll be in a position where & mdash; you know, we& rsquo; re going to know whether the strategy is working in Afghanistan, & rdquo; he told Foreign Policy& rsquo; s Fred Kaplan. Gates also said a 2011 departure date makes sense politically. & ldquo; It would be a mistake to wait until January 2012& Prime; before leaving, Gates said, because it& rsquo; s too close to Obama& rsquo; s campaign for reelection. Leaving at that time might make it difficult find a replacement knowing there is a possibility the Preside. . .
