WASHINGTON & mdash; Defense Secretary Robert Gates will retire from his post as the military& rsquo; s civilian boss sometime in 2011, he told Foreign Policy Magazine in an interview published Monday.

His press secretary, Geoff Morrell, acknowledged to Fox News that Gates has been & ldquo; trying in vain to find the appropriate time to retire& hellip; and that it makes sense to bow out in 2011. & rdquo; Gates said that he feels it& rsquo; s best to leave after the Afghanistan surge is complete and after the administration has had the chance to review its effect. & ldquo; I think that by next year I& rsquo; ll be in a position where & mdash; you know, we& rsquo; re going to know whether the strategy is working in Afghanistan, & rdquo; he told Foreign Policy& rsquo; s Fred Kaplan. Gates also said a 2011 departure date makes sense politically. & ldquo; It would be a mistake to wait until January 2012& Prime; before leaving, Gates said, because it& rsquo; s too close to Obama& rsquo; s campaign for reelection.
